Adler's Midwest Meandering Spring 2021

This is our last day in our park in Apache Junction for this winter, and we have decided to do a 'mini-blog' for our travels back to Wisconsin.  We will be on the road about 3.5 weeks so it will be short-lived, but we are packing a lot of things in our travels.  We are gearing our meandering around our favorite things to do, which is hike, bike and geo-cache.  Most of our stops are planned because of the interesting things that we are finding through geo-caching. We were introduced to geo-caching in October of 2007 by our son, Mike, our daughter-in-law, Lori and grandson, Greg.  They took us to Kettle Moraine State Forest Lapham Peak Unit, near Delafield and we were hooked immediately.  In this time of Covid, it has been our salvation this winter.  It has gotten us out to enjoy the beautiful Arizona desert, and get some much needed exercise. So, you should have received the link to our blog and if you want to travel along with us, you just need to save our link in your favorite place and click on it when you have time.  Or you can disregard it, if you are not interested.


This was taken in Gold Canyon, which is s community that is adjacent to Apache Junction, and you can see the Superstition Mountains in the background.  We have done many hikes in those mountains in the 16 years that we have been coming to Arizona.  We just call this our 'playground'. 



This is our site in Bonita Vista Mobile Home Park and we are nestled between two homes with wonderful neighbors.  Tomorrow, we leave for Grants, New Mexico and settle in there for two night's stay.  I plan to log something every day, even if it's just to notify our family that we are on track and we made it safely to our present destination.

 We have a sunny day, but cool, so we are going to Keokuk County to claim a cache for our Arizona challenge cache.  The county is named after Sauk Chief Keokuk.  We wondered if it was an Indian name, and indeed, it is.  We found two cemetery caches in Keokuk County and the first one took us to a quaint old outhouse!  Here we go again.  One for the Outhouse Club!  This time the cache was hidden near the corner post of the perimeter of the cemetery, and not in the outhouse.   Our next cache took us to 'The Rock' of Mahaska County.  It is a Freedom Rock and is a permanent memorial honoring all the past, present and future veterans of Mahaska County.  It was painted on all four sides, with the flag painted on top of it.  These were all prominent servicemen from different wars that are painted on this side.  We had to file a DNF here, as we looked within a 30 feet radius of our G-zone and we came up empty.  That happens so...

 Today is our last full day in Lawton, Oklahoma and we are ready to move northward.  The winds died down and it turned out to be a beautiful day.  Our daughter, Lynn, son-in-law, Gary and grandson, Sam drove up from Dallas to see us today, as it is only 2 1/2 hours of driving.  How special is that?  With Covid and social distancing, we were able to make a bunch of snack foods and take to the clubhouse and eat there, and no one came in that whole time we were there.  I guess because it was so nice out and people didn't have to deal with the wind.  Lynn and Gary have had their 2 shots of vaccine and Sam kept his distance from us, but we aren't concerned, as we have had our vaccine, also.  We did wear our masks for the duration, except for eating.  Lynn is getting into quilting, so she went 'shopping under our bed'!
